The best time to visit the Serengeti largely depends on what you want to see and experience, particularly if your primary interest is the Great Migration. The Serengeti offers varied experiences throughout the year:DEC - MAR:Calving Season: This is when the wildebeest calving takes place, primarily in the southern Serengeti. Approximately 500,000 calves are born during a short window in February, which attracts a large number of predators and provides incredible wildlife viewing opportunities.Weather: These are the wetter months, often referred to as the short rains (November to December) and long rains (March to May). The landscape is lush and green.APR - MAY:Transition Period: The herds start their move towards the western and central Serengeti.Weather: This is the peak of the long rainy season. Some lodges may be closed during this time due to the heavy rain, and some roads might be challenging to navigate.JUN - JUL:Grumeti River Crossing: The migration moves to the western Serengeti, and dramatic river crossings occur at the Grumeti River. This is a good time to witness large crocodiles preying on the migrating herds.Weather: The rain begins to taper off, and the landscape starts drying.AUG - OCT:Mara River Crossing: One of the most sought-after experiences is when the migration reaches the northern Serengeti and the herds cross the treacherous Mara River, often multiple times. This is a peak season due to the dramatic nature of these crossings.Weather: These are the drier months, and temperatures can be warmer.NOV:Short Rains & Return: The short rains begin, and the herds start moving back towards the central and eventually southern Serengeti, getting ready for the next calving season. While the Great Migration is a major draw, the Serengeti offers rich biodiversity and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities year-round. Outside of the migration, you'll have a better chance of spotting resident game and enjoying the park without the peak-season crowds. If you're interested in birdwatching, the wet season (December to April) is the best time as many migratory birds are present.Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on personal preferences regarding wildlife, weather, and crowd levels.
One of the greatest wilderness areas in the world, the Serengeti supports a magnificent diversity and abundance of animals, from the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino (although these are rarely spotted) – to giraffe, Grant's gazelle, impala, kongoni, topi and eland.
Follow Professional Guidance: Always adhere to the advice and instructions of your experienced safari guide. They are trained to read animal behaviors, understand when situations might become dangerous, and know how to react in case of emergencies. Their guidance is critical for both your safety and the well-being of the wildlife.Maintain a Safe Distance from Wildlife: Remember that the animals in the Serengeti are wild and unpredictable. Never approach, feed, or attempt to touch them. Always stay inside your safari vehicle unless you are in designated areas, and even then, remain alert and cautious. Respecting animals' space ensures safety for visitors and prevents undue stress for the animals.Health Precautions: Before embarking on your safari, consult with a doctor or travel clinic regarding necessary vaccinations and preventive measures.
First hand knowledge: Our travel advisors have stayed at or, at the very least, seen the lodges they sell. They have experienced these safaris first-hand. This allows them to advise confidently on the safaris they create.Extensive relationships and product knowledge: Things like availability are becoming more and more of an issue and our advisors will help you to get space in the areas you want to stay, even during peak seasons. They do this through our special connections with lodges and also with their knowledge alternative lodges that provide a similar experience at the same price point.
